What is Golden Week?Â
In Japan, four Public Holidays fall in the same week, the first week of May. These four holidays are:Â
- Showa Day (April 29th): It celebrates the birthday of Emperor Showa
- Constitution Day (May 3rd): It celebrates the enactment of the Constitution of Japan.Â
- Greenery Day (May 4th): It celebrates nature, honoring the Showa emperor’s love for plants.Â
- Children’s Day (May 5th): As the name suggests, it’s a day to wish for the happiness of children.Â
Most people in Japan take paid leaves in addition the public holidays to visit their hometown or to celebrate Golden Week with their families. A lot of festivals are held all over Japan as well. A large number of people travel domestically to enjoy a week-long vacation.Â
Around Golden Week most transports are heavily crowded along with all the tourist spots. Additionally, the weather is pleasant, making Golden Week the perfect time for some relaxation. To sum it up, Golden Week is the time of the year in Japan where festivities are in the air, shinkansens, and all the tourist spots!
Golden Week, a week of relief for the Mangaka
The Weekly Shonen Jump goes on a break during Golden Week every year. It’s a time for the Mangaka to celebrate the holiday with their families and take a break from their hectic schedules. For how hard they work throughout the year to get the chapters out on a weekly basis, we can surely wait for a few weeks here and there!Â
